Spider veins (also known as thread veins) are a skin condition that can appear on all skin types and cause physical discomfort in addition to being unsightly. Here’s an overview of this condition and an explanation of the treatment options available.

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are similar in appearance to varicose veins. The most common areas where this condition develops are the face and legs, which can make people hesitant about wearing any clothes that reveal skin affected by this problem. But spider veins are not just an aesthetic problem, since they can cause physical ailments, too. Some common symptoms of spider veins include pain and discomfort in the affected area.

What causes spider veins?

Healthy veins or blood vessels facilitate the flow of uninterrupted circulation. If for any reason the valves get blocked, veins may twist, swell, or be distorted in other ways. This can then give rise to the characteristic spider web pattern that appears under the skin’s surface.

What causes spider veins?

There are several options when it comes to addressing this issue.

Micro-sclerotherapy is a quick non-surgical option that involves injecting a solution that closes up the veins, therefore eliminating their thread-like or spider web appearance.

IPL laser therapy can be an alternative spider or thread vein treatment.. A laser lamp is directed to the affected area to break the vein malformation. The results are often immediate. There’s a second type of laser treatment known as EVLT (endovenous laser treatment). This takes a bit longer than IPL therapy and requires the insertion of a catheter into the vein, through which laser energy is directed to the affected veins.

Lastly, there’s thermo-coagulation treatment, also known as Veinwave. This treatment uses micro-waves to destroy vein malformations one by one. The results are also immediate and sessions are typically short, lasting approximately 20 minutes.

What happens after treatment?

All procedures to treat spider veins are carried out on an outpatient basis, so you will be able to go home the same day. However, and as it happens with any other medical procedure, it’s important to make sure you understand what’s involved in the recovery process.

Because there are different procedures available, the exact aftercare instructions vary, and so does recovery time. In most cases, you can carry on with your normal routine straight away. If there are any exceptions or any activities that you should be cautious about, your doctor will let you know.

After thread vein treatment you may also experience some bruising in the treated area, but this is temporary. This is more common among patients who get treated with EVLT or micro-sclerotherapy. On the other hand, if your treatment involves the use of lasers, you’ll be asked to avoid direct sun exposure for a while and to use compression stockings.

There’s one more thing to expect after treatment, and that’s too see your unsightly spider veins gone. For the majority of people, this is a big self-esteem booster and can also improve their quality of life since there’s no more pain or discomfort to deal with.
